I don't know about you, but I tend to have a multidude of web sites open at once.

The easy way to get your site visible in a multi-tabbed browser is to have a favicon associated with your site.

Favicons are made from .GIF images. I am no expert on this but I have made loads of them.

Here's what I do ....

Grap your logo and make a similar image in 64x 64 pixels and save it as a .gif image using an optimized pallette.

Alternatively, you create your own cool but square image,

Then go to http://www.chami.com and click through to their favicon generator. You can even get an animated one based on your static image.

Just go there, it's great  Grin They give you all the instructions on how to use the favicon to get rid of the default browser one.

I'll add my vote for chami.com also.  I have it bookmarked and create a favicon for any site I'm working on.  When I do designs for others, I always include a favicon in the package.  They've really upped the script in the past year or so.  I used to always get errors when I tried to use it and since they've updated it, I can't say that I've gotten any errors.  The animated favicon is cool too.  I'm glad they implemented that.  I wish they would give us the option of choosing the scroll direction however.  Sometimes, images just look better going the other way.

Thanks very much for this! I was going to ask awhile back how to have an image for my site instead of the browser default, but, felt like it was a dumb question and was afraid to ask! I never did get around to researching it and finding out about it...

I did not know what a favicon was even, and that it was the logo thing.

So, that got me thinking and I checked.  Sure enough, Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro do NOT support this format.  Darn, I was hoping I could save my PSD or PSP to ICO.  That would have made things MUCH more simple.  Oh well, I'm happy with the chami option too.

It's interesting that there are still alot of websites not using favicons. I guess, unless they have a tabbed browser they would not realize the benefits of helping people find their site.
