Hi

Can anyone tell me whether putting 'title' tags on links is an SEO must? I'm doing it anyway but just thought I'd ask whether it's going to be a significant contributing factor to my natural listings

thnk you,
gio

Hi Gio, welcome to the forums.

In ans. to your question:

I don't think it is.

What is a must is to have your keywords in the Anchor text. But these words should not be the same on every site that points to yours so they seem natural and not part of a link exchange campaign.

Search engine algorithms are always evolving to try and combat spam and duplicate content so my thinking is to only use the title tag to show some kind of description to the visitor as they hover over the link to help them decide to click. If you just have the keywords then it would be a spam signal IMHO. A bit like alt tags for images where they are meant to be for visually-impaired people to understand what the image was showing rather than for a couple of keywords.
