I am trying to run a program written in java called moneydance and is supposed to be cross platform compatible and is supposed to be completely contained meaning it contains java. I tried to follow the instructions

"Linux (x86 processor; includes Java) After the download is finished, double-click the moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh file or run "./moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh" from the command line, in the same directory as the downloaded file."

However when I click on the moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh file it opens in Kwrite a text editor for MEPIS. Any ideas on how to get it to run? Also I don't understand "or run "./moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh" from the command line, in the same directory as the downloaded file." How do I run from the command line in the same directory as the downloaded file? I guess I am talking about syntax.

that's right, .sh extension used for shell scripts which are nothing else but text, so KWrite is trying to open them. Not sure like in KDE but GNOME if .sh file had execution permission ask whenever to open file in text editor or run. Sorry can't switch to KDE now as had a lot of programs open right now.

it's mean that you need to run terminal, change directory with cd command to the directory where you've downloaded file e.g.
cd /opt/Downloads/moneydance
and later execute it either by:
sh moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh
or like this:
./moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh

If something doesn't work, please let me know details along with error messages.

I did what you said and it still didn't work. However it did say something about permissions and so I looked at the permissions for the file and saw a box that said executable was not checked so I checked it and tried again and it works. Thanks.

Well, I'll probably have to keep a copy of windows on my computer for testing and to stay up with what is happening with it to help others that haven't changed but just before I got my laptop I had been using Simply MEPIS for everything except finances and I am continuing in that behavior except I am doing my finances in both for now. So for all intents and purposes I have switched. Go Linux especially Simply MEPIS.

Don, if you don't plan to use Windows on a daily basis you can do just like I was doing. There is free processor emulator called QEMU, it would let you install Windows into file Smiley This way you can run it any time you wish under Linux, you can burn image file with Windows to DVD and always have a fresh Windows(I mean that if your old installation would be broken, you can simply take copy of your file and work with fresh installation or with all programs you've installed, it's very handy IMHO).
If anyone interested, just let me know and I'll post small HOWTO about how to do this.(FUI I never used VMWare myself but heard that although it's harder to install it work a bit faster than QEMU, on other side QEMU is free developing program so it could start working faster with time. Also I think that although it's not blazing fast speed is acceptable).
