I know we all love to hate big corporations for dominating the web and operating systems but the user experience is so good overall.

My installation of windows XP is superb I think.  Cool  Grin  Wink From plugging in SD cards to, DVDs and playing music in Media player and connecting my camcorder, it works so well.

Andy, I do think XP is superior to the past windows by far. Things are just simpler. like not having to call a program to unzip something.

I have to agree with this. XP was a great improvement. It's been a long, long time since I was faced with the BSOD or any of those dreadful past times.

Now that you have XP, you might consider trying out Windows Defender (If not the beta, the final when it's released), and downloading Service Packs 1 & 2. I've been pretty happy with my upgrades.

The newest version of Windows Media Player is really good as well.

Things might be even better when Windows Vista comes out.

Linux can do this too, with only difference that it let you setup thing the way you like them to work for you Grin

Such things happen here as well if you try beta software, but you can downgrade to previous version of software which sometimes isn't possible in Windows or doesn't work like it should.

had a question to all Windows' fans, did it slowdown with time or it works perfectly all the time?(this probably was the most annoying thing during my Windows experience)

never had same pleasant experience as you, maybe you didn't work with it for too long? Smiley BTW DOS was fine for me, at least I had a lot time for games and shouldn't worry for making cash those times Grin (maybe that's the reason I like DOS).

BTW DOS was fine for me,

DOS is still available! You just need to install XP, click on start and run. Enter CMD into the box and hit return to bring up a DOS window!

The old favorite commands are still there like CD, DIR and even the EDIT function  Grin

So if you install Linux, then WINE then XP you can maybe get to use DOS again  Wink I'm not sure of minimum system requirements to do this though? Maybe best to look for an old 486 at the scrap yard.

I know of this but, it's ripped console which doesn't have same functionality as old DOS.

neah, I do now wish back to DOS at all, just tell that I prefer it to Windows 3.1. BTW here on Linux we have programs like DOSBox which is emulator of old DOS, which is capable of running old games and other stuff Wink

I got lucky all the way around with that. It was my first new computer since my Apple2 It was a Packard Bell 486. I always hear people complaining about Packards, but i never had ANY trouble with it. Had it for about 3 years I think.

read that post about xp and the monitor. Thats good to know. I haven't switched monitors since we've got xp. But thats the way I usually did it.

It's crazy isn't it that Windows thinks monitors are such a difficult piece of hardware to deal with  Tongue I read some sad cases where people got a blank display! At least I could see something on the screen to work with.

Maybe MAC's might be worse? But I guess MAC users are most unlikely to change their components  Huh

How about building a version of Linux that works behind the scenes of XP like a doctor and offers an escape route to a working OS when windows crashes?

really weird as monitor seems to have standart video protocol and the only difference is actually in color profile...

I doubt, from what I heard they are not, and the only thing which stop them from spreading are costs...

actually such Linux distro already exists, and personally I use Knoppix for restoring broken PCs to recover data from them... it's not specially adopted for recover purposes but still do the job so I don't plan to change it for specially designed resuce distro as for now.

I wouldn't knock Windows. It's got some very good software and you can buy just about anything to run on it, but Linux also has some very good software and most of it comes free to install.
