I'm not affiliated with netfirms so this is strictly an observational comment.  I'm also not even familiar with netfirms and only just now had to do a review of them based on your post.  It seems to me that they have not been continuously complained about [which is good] and for a FWP [free website provider], they have had fairly good reviews in the past.  A search shows they have .02% of the domain name market which may not seem like a lot but if you think about it, that's over 12,000 domain names.  To have such a small amount of average user complaints, with such a large customer base, it does say something about the company.

It's nearly impossible to completely guard against a DDOS attack [trust me, it's happened to me a few times] so if that is your only complaint against them, my suggestion would be to wait out the attack and let them apologize and explain what happened once everything is back up again.  I don't know the particulars of what happened but generally, if a hosting company recovers from the attack fairly quickly, responds to queries as to what happened, and are professional enough to admit if they failed to protect the server appropriately [but have now done all they can to do so], then I would suggest you stay with them if all other services are meeting your needs.  Keep us updated.

P.S. This post should be moved from Free Hosting to Hosting Company Feedback.

Moved. Wink

I too have used Netfirms for other web projects and came to the same conclusion you have. Besides terrible downtime, the service was prone to slow loading and errors. I was pretty disatisfied over-all, and left them soon after...

I once signed up with a hosting firm because I recognised the name. Unfortunately I didn't remember I came across them after reading bad things. So my site was down alot and the server even got hacked and my homepage got taken over by hackers! Can you imagine the horror of looking at your own domain home page and seeing a message from some hacking team boasting how they have taken over the server  Tongue

There is a saying that any publicity is good publicity and I have found that to be true to my cost.
