I installed phpbb2 and get "connection refused when attempting to contact localhost:85 ". This is after I click the admin link.

If I am running a local web server on my PC the script connects with my local version of the code i.e. goes off line.

The link I clicked on was on the web.

I installed some mod to give search-engine friendly urls. The .htaccess file starts like this:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On

Then some rules follow but nothing to do with port 85 and local host.

So it seems like the online script wnats to connect with my local machine. If I have a local server running it connects OK but if not, it gives the error message.

Accessing the same script from another PC gave the same error.

Can anyone give me some hints as to what to look for? I can't track down anything useful on the web.

Andy but have you tried completely remove .htacess and see whenver it work? if so please let me know, as my best guess right now that you've did something wrong with it, as I've phpbb2 installed on my PC and I've never experienced such problem, if you wish you can let me know what hack is installed and I'll try to install it locally and see what's happen.
and please tell me is all things you're doing are done on local server or on the web?

The mod is detailed below. When I use it on the web it keeps trying to go to localhost offline when I try and login as admin. Without this mod, phpbb2 attaches session id's to the url which I don't want. They could have used php's hidden session variables but they choose to create their own and store them in the database.

Anyway, I have spent too much time with phpbb2 trying to make it work.  Tongue

I think i will use SMF instead.

For your information, here is stuff I posted before going back and re-installing:

The .htaccess file is required to specify how to re-write urls. It's to support search engine friendly urls. The hack replaces dynamic url links in the html with ones with static html links for guests and spiders. Then, when you click on these links, the modrewrite feature of apache is used to translate the url to the real one that is recognised by phpbb.

The mod works fine on a local server. But on the web I have the problems.

I couldn't find the download page for the hack so I have pasted the details here:

I had to add:
Options +FollowSymLinks

on the first line of .htaccess for it to work for me.

If you install it locally, you are not likely to see my problem. The problem only seems to occur when running on the web.
