I'm switched on by separating content and formatting. This is the best way to go for top search engine recognition and ease of mods to the look and layout of your pages.

Everyone new to web design has to respond to the challenge of the millions of web designers before them who are benefiting from the age of their domain names, volumes of inbound links and masses of content.

Using MS Paint is not the best way to go in my humble opinion  Tongue I would certainly struggle to design a web page with MS Paint.

As a beginner I would advise learning to code in XHTML followed by CSS level 1 then PHP with a hint of MySQL.

I don't use templates so can't comment.

There are plenty of template sites filled with free downloads, but it seems a lot of them do not focus on clean design or compatibility. You might want to consider focusing less on graphics and more on structure. You can make a very nice looking site with very little graphics, which is better for you since you don't have the right tools for this type of designing.

And you can also use a few select free graphics provided by others to add a little bit of interest to your site without looking out of place... There are also plenty of graphic generators available at sites like CoolText, FlamingText, GRSites, and CoolArchive. You might even want to check out ZyWeb's trial site builder and use their utilities to make a good website.

I would have been glad to offer myself up to make you a free template, but I have spent too much time in the past working on free projects for people who quickly lost interest in their websites and put my work to waste... So the best I can do is offer reccomendations or assistance if you get stuck.

And what about free graphic kits like on freewebtemplates.com ? Some are quite nice and can be a good start for creating a website
