Question How does a company like ZDNet.com acquire # 1 position out of 28,400,000 from the search query no cost websites when their page has only the word no (and then only as part of another word like notebooks) on their page but does not contain either cost or websites anywhere on their web page, nor are they in their meta tags (side note their page has no Doctype or charset and Failed validation, 406 errors). I am wondering because I did a search for no cost websites to see where my websites stood and my website donecweb.cjb.cc which is on a free server and has no advertising other than submission to search engines with a few mentions in forums is # 2 of 28,400,000 on the search engine Altavista right behind ZDNet.com.
http://www.altavista.com/web/results?q=no%20cost%20websites

Google donecweb.cjb.cc is # 1 in Results 1 - 10 of about 9,750,000 for no cost websites (ZDNet.com doesn't show)
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=no+cost+websites&btnG=Search

Yahoo has donecweb.cjb.cc at # 6 in Results 1 - 10 of about 29,000,000 for no cost websites (ZDNet.com doesn't show)
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=no%20cost%20websites&ei=UTF-8

Alltheweb has donecweb.cjb.cc at  # 2 in results 1 - 10 of 24,700,000 Results for no cost websites (ZDNet.com again is # 1)
http://www.alltheweb.com/search?q=no%20cost%20websites&cs=utf-8

BTW of non-sponsored links for no cost templates my donecweb.cjb.cc (which has been submitted to search engines and been around for quite awhile) and bestwebstop.dbws.info *which is not complete and has not been submitted to any thing except an occasional mention in some forums) are shown as......

Google Results 1 - 10 of about 3,090,000 for no cost templates donecweb.cjb.cc is # 3
http://www.google.com/search?q=no+cost+templates&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official

Yahoo Results 1 - 10 of about 8,680,000 for no cost templates bestwebstop.dbws.info is #3
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=no%20cost%20templates&ei=UTF-8

Alltheweb 1 - 10 of 8,050,000 Results for no cost templates www.bestwebstop.dbws.info is # 2 and donecweb.cjb.cc is # 4
http://www.alltheweb.com/search?q=no%20cost%20templates&cs=utf-8

MSN Page 1 of 234,185 results containing no cost templates bestwebstop.dbws.info is # 2
http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=no%20cost%20templates

AltaVista found 8,710,000 results donecweb.cjb.cc is # 3

Hi Don,

I confirmed that your site does seem to rank well for "no cost websites" but only after I adjusted the results to go world-wide (my results are biased to the uk).

The answer to your question is that the guys at ZDNET are powerful in that they have a big presence on the web and a few phone calls, drinks in the bar, meets at the search engine conferences somehow can possibly skew the search engine results in their favour  Wink At least that's my theory. In the same way people with zero page rank may get a link back from my link exchange as long as they are buddies from the forums  Grin

My thoughts were that they bought something but I can't imagine what or why they would for such a search engine. Maybe they are partial owners of these web sites. or something like that allowing them to always be # 1. Well there not # 1 on all searches for that search engine as they are not # 1 for test.
