I submit my sites to directories mostly, as for search engines they seems to find you(at least those important ones)... I didn't spot that submission could really improve time of your listing with SE(I'm talking about Google, MSN, Yahoo). But I could be wrong, maybe someone had more luck with submission to them.

I suspect that many search engines will sell your email to spam lists since I used to submit to many search engines and never got any traffic from them. For search engines, all you need is a link to your site and the search engine robots find your site and you get listed automatically. Googlebot and MSNbot go crazy for new content if it's linked to from an existing site and they don't know about it.  Grin Remember that they are in battle for supremacy of the web so they never know how big your site may be so they must be first to grab he content!

I agree with senso that submitting to directories is usually much better since a human reviewer is normally involved to screen out bad sites with redirects etc. So the search engines count the link from directories as a good scoring point in the ranking algorithm. Even if you may not get any traffic from that directory  Tongue

Personally, I'm avoiding trading links with people building link farms. The better way is JV (joint venture) partnerships where a small number of webmasters with related content club together to advertise each others products by way of mutual endorsement. You can see this happening with the big names in internet marketing.

Even one-way links from your site to highly-rated sites about a similar subject probably help your site ranking.
