I'm proud user of Debian GNU/Linux OS

http://forums.debian.net - unofficial Debian supporting forums, I'm sticking there for some time and seems like a good place to look help for Debian Linux OS.

http://forums.gentoo.org/ this one as you could guess belongs to Gentoo, but it could be helpful if you use other distribution as well since a lot of things are done in the same way in different distros. BTW it's probably one of the busiest Linux forums...

http://www.linuxquestions.org - another big community, although from my experience your thread could be easily lost amongst others and you never get reply Tongue on the good side you may find answer for some of your questions in old threads.

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ - this one belongs to new distro called Ubuntu which is based on Debian(the main difference from   is that Ubuntu is run by company and Debian by community), therefore it could be useful as for Ubuntu users so as for Debian and other Debian based distributives.

http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/ - SuSE support forum.

I know there are number of forums which is not on this list but I only put those which visited by me or where I participated.

I'll be glad to read your tutorial when you get done. I haven't made up my mind for sure but I am leaning towards Debian with Gnome and Wine if they work well together.

I have looked at several other Linux Distribution (proper usage of the term?) alternatives but there are so many it is hard to really spend the time learning enough to make an intelligent decision. I have looked at what others have said and how they feel. This left me with the position I now find myself in. A long time ago I tried RedHat since at that time it was free and was disappointed, but that was quite some time ago (over ten years). What I hear about Debian, Gnome and Wine sound like they will do for me what I want but at the same time just because I start with one does not mean I will stay with it.

yes that's truth, I've also start with RedHat and I doesn't like it as well. As for Debian I never heard a lot about it, it was something unknown to me... I decide to try it once I've got my hands on Knoppix and find out that it was built on Debian. After first few steps I've liked it and was fascinated by solving "troubles" (I've got messy disk which doesn't read well in my CDROM so I wasn't able to obtain all necessary packages, so I was trying to figure out how to fix my installation with what I have, start X server and so on). Anyway in the meantime when I've got Debian working, I've also tried SlackWare, SuSE, ALT Linux, Linux XP and later Gentoo and QNX. But for some reason none of them did on my such great impression as Debian so I've stay with it.
I see a lot of messages on forums telling that if you wish easy to use Linux to go Mandriva or SuSE, I can't argue with this since I don't have a lot of experience in this distros, but to advocate Debian just check messages on this board: http://forums.debian.net/
you'll see that a lot of problems there are solved through standart tools like apt-get and dpkg-reconfigure which would do almost everything for you. And as for famous SuSE's YaST(GUI tool for configuring your system, is now ported to Debian as well, so as many other tools which previously presented only on other Linux distributives).

You are not the only one to report such experiences and it's these experiences I am listening to and trying to learn from so I have better ones.

I've installed both Suse & Mandriva (Mandrake) and both were very easy to set up. Anyway thanks for the Linux forum links. They are well worth a look.

Oh BTW i got computer weekly sent to me free again this week and in it, it said this :-
Quote
Linux creator Linus Torvalds has released version 2.6.12 of the Linux kernel, the backbone of the Linux operating system.

The new kernel includes support for TPM (trusted platform modules) to offer greater security, changes to drivers and other features. The latest version supports TPM chips like those found in some IBM laptops.
