Just thought i'd tell you that Sun Solaris has now gone open sourse.

The OpenSolaris project is an open source operating system, a community development effort and a place for collaboration and conversation about OpenSolaris technology. It is aimed at developers and users who want to develop and improve operating systems. The OpenSolaris technology represents cutting edge operating system design, but the innovation is just getting started! We've got lots to offer.

The only reason i looked at the above website was that i was sent a trade magazine through the post and it said something about Sun Solaris going open sourse in a few months time. It looks to me as though it's open sourse already though.

Do you think it's gone open source, to do what Linux has done and get more people using it and others developing for it ?

I'd love to give it a go myself, just to see what it was like, but don't think i'll be messing trying to install it for a while yet. I'll stick with what i've got for now.

from what I've heard it's pretty slow comparing to competitors(don't know if it truth or not, it's better to check it yourself to see it). As for reasons why Sun make it open source I could see few points for this:
they are gain popularity, get a lot of free people who would work as a testers and possibly programmers to polish and improve their code. Open source has a great advantage if compare it to patented software, even biggest corportation like M$ couldn't test their products on so many real systems with so much different hardware as it's done in Linux, security holes are also treated differently in open source community(I believe that this is the one of the main reasons why Linux run much more stable and safer).
