You may wish to also check out In The Beginning for a condensed lot of good info to consider when building a website for business purposes. Lots of links and useful info.

I had a look at both of these, In The Beginning, also www.3.org and found them both to be informative and very helpful....I learnt html tags 2/3 years ago, using notepad as the text editor.....Having rarely used it since and being called upon to make a story for a primary class I put this together in half an hour (it took almost an hours' hunt to find the gifs...(they are not so  FREEly offerred these days).  I know technically it is all wrong, background, changing of font colours etc....but it is doing the job and highlighting the fact that GenerositySacrifice  is not a BAD thing.......

http://sue.weblamp.net/story/gstorya.html

I am fully aware of the micreants of the page, BUT what I'm  trying tosay is that once learnt, HTML does stay in the mind, just like learning to ride a bike or swim.....anyway the littlies love it!!! Grin  And it proves a point about how easily HTML can be remembered Wink
So allpcs never ever give up, each small step is an acheivement to the ultimate outcome Cheesy

PS Denis, I h ope is OK?Huh??

I taught myself web design and HTML in the beginning... My brother gave me a few tips on how to write up my own documents, and then I went on from there to view codes of other websites to get a feel of what HTML design was all about and how I could use it to fit into my own projects. Then I started using WYSIWYG editors because I found it easier. This is not something I necessarily recommend... Anyone who starts out with an automatic HTML editor does not get a full understanding of HTML or experience to help them along the way.

Like with Susie's experience, learning this way is a good thing. Once you know how to write HTML, you rarely forget it. Sometimes you need a refresher, but for the most part it sticks right in there!

All of the links to Tutorials previously listed will work fine for someone starting out in HTML. I can't really recommend anything more than taking it hands-on and learning from the ground up. However, if you ever need any real/live assistance with beginner's/intermediate HTML... You can contact me on AIM/AOL as 'articutis'. I would be glad to help you if you need it.

A good place to start is: http://www.w3schools.com/

They offer a good variety of subjects and interests that most of us will run into.

I have frequently hit on w3 schools and found it very helpful.

A few years ago I put up a page that teaches you the basics of html in less than 1 hour: http://www.urgentclick.com/how-to-build-web-pages.html

The scary thing is that I am still learning after around 6 years despite being addicted, so even though it seems easy, it somehow isn't  Huh

One thing that bothers me is so many people saying they use notepad to edit code, I have used many different editors and I stongly recommend that you use HTML KIT (please do not use notepad!)  just search for it.

What have you got against notepad other than the fact that it doesnt wrap?

I use Dreamweaver in text mode, it's probably one of the best text editors around and the find/replace feature is very handy for big files. I can also preview the file in a browser with DW.

I prefer to edit in notepad. I have been using since the mid 90s. I use Dreamweaver here at the office when I need to see why a table isn't acting right. Then I still used the code side, but I can view the wysisyg to get a better idea.

I really hate developers that rely too much on these editors. Most don't do a clean enough code and I have to go back in and fix the problems.

I don't like notepad because it makes your life difficult. It will take you far longer to code a page in notepad and you are much more likely to make mistakes. This is why I don't like notepad  Smiley Why are people against editors that have evolved to be great tools for coders and are still free ?

I have never heard of WYSIWYG editor that you could turn off the automatic changes in it. Since it is the nature of such editors to make these changes and since the changes they make may not be what you want it leaves a lot of room for the use of things like NotePad or NotePad++. What I don't understand is why anyone is still using NotePad when NotePad++ can be gotten for free and is so very much better for such editing. If you want NotePad you can get it from...
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

I would really like to see a WYSIWYG editor with a great preview that you could start working with and it would produce proper but simple HTML and then for editing you could turn off the automatic changes and just have a built-in HTML editor and good preview for free. I guess I need to win the lottery and hire someone to make it and then give it away for free. Grin

I am not against them. I have used several programs and have not really found any that I like. I use Dreamweaver, but hand code there as well. I am an old fashion kind of gal I guess.

I am not sure about the newer versions, but the older version of Archonphilia was good for this. I would suggest taking a look at the program if you haven't done so already.

I used to use firstpage2000 and now use HTML Kit from www.chami.com I think it's great and has a preview window. It's free and lots of people have written free plugins to enhance it. To check my sites in dynamic mode with php and mysql on my local PC I am using Mambo server which is a really easy way to have an apache web server with php and mysql. Again this is free.

I have tried Archonphilia in the past and it was pretty good but then I wanted something different and now the new Archonphilia seems to be run by Java and is different. I would like to try an older version but can't find one.

I have used firstpage 2000 also but I haven't tried it since my way of making web pages has changed maybe I'll check it out again.
