A month or so ago i needed a new printer because my other old one was broke. Anyway i thought i'd buy one of those fax phones that also work as a scanner and printer. I got one and thought it was great until i ran out of ink.
 Angry
I've just been looking on the net to find a new black ink (paperjet 55e ink refill) cartridge and then found the price. £40 for a new cartridge !
 Cry
How can they charge £40 for a black ink cartridge ?
£20 is about the norm for black ink !
 Shocked
Does anyone know where i can buy a rip-off version of a BT paperjet 55e ink refill ?

That is what you get for buying BT. Grin I would suggest you go with another brand next time.

maybe there is some "un-official" ink cartridges like made by companies like PrintRite, JetTec or some other? these companies producing cheaper ink for popular printers and I'm using such ink myself for 5 year now(I've heard some people have problems with them but I don't). So maybe you should look for products from one of these companies and see what price they will offer?

"un-official" ink cartridges. That's what i was trying to say when i said rip-off cartridges but couldn't think of the name.
I might even go with a ink refill, but i did read something about the chip they use on the cartridge stopping you from doing ink refills.

sorry didn't understand you at first. As for refilling cartridges I've heard that there is a way to reset them, although I didn't know about technology.

Thanks anyway.
 Wink
What gets me is that i could buy a new printer for the £40 it would cost for a new ink cartridge. Something should be done about these companies that sell these cartridges.
Lets just think about how many ball point pens i could buy for the same money !
Ink shouldn't cost as much as some companies are trying to charge.
 Sad
Anyway I will know next time i buy a printer that i need to look at the price of the ink and not think too much about the cost of the printer. In the long run, it's the price of the ink that counts.

yeah, in our days when most of printers provide printouts of the more or less same quality it's important to pay attention to ink price.

I've got the same problem with my PaperJet 50E.

The fax machine cost £79 to buy and came with an ink cartirge that lasted long enough to print 2 pages of text!!!

It does say that you should get around 80 pages from it.

I've just been looking and the cheapest price I found was £35 for a new cartridge for this printer.

If anyone finds any cheaper please let me know, otherwise I'm taking this thing back as it is a rip off!!!

Anyone else thinking of buying a BT fax machine. Bewarned stay well clear

I have a Cannon i960.  It has 6 seperate ink cartridges.  I almost fainted when I saw how much Cannon wanted for ink refills.  Then I went to The Printer Ink Warehouse and got them for WAY cheaper.  I've heard people say that ordering replacement cartridges from an "off brand" company isn't a good idea b/c the quality isn't as good but I've been buying ink from this company ever since.  I've noticed ZERO degradation of quality using their cartridges.  They are VERY cheap for what you get.

good that this topic pop-up as I wish to say that I probably find good way to save on costs and have quality printouts. Now I've two printers both Epson brand one is pretty old Stylus Color 640 (which was mentioned in this thread above) I'm filling it with PrintRite cartridges as they cost way cheaper than original ones, but since I use this printer for printing out text for university and just to save my eyes from reading from monitor it's perfectly do the job. One cartiridge cost me about 3 USD and let me print about 200+ pages, I think it's not bad deal.
I also have Stylus Photo R300 which I mostly use to print out my photos, it has 6 ink cartridges and one cost around 15USD but if you buy economy pack(all 6 cartriges it would cost you something around 55USD) isn't this nice deal? I prefer to print out photos myself so I'm really glad to have this model, I couldn't advice it to those who print a lot of text but in combination with some old printer it could be good deal IMHO.
