There are a lot of problems with SP2. I would suggest uninstalling it until they have fixes for the major bugs.

I'm not using Windows anymore but I still deal with XP machines as frequntly asked to fix some problems, and from what I've seen SP2 could cause more problems than fix... it's make already demanding to quality of hardware XP even more demanding(I mean that if you have some faulty hardware it will cause you a lot of troubles you would see some weird bugs which you would never see on other Windows version or Linux), on other hand SP2 fix some serious vulnerabilities from what I know, so if you're not using any firewall probably it would be better for you to install SP2.
Also please note that some drivers you're using now may stop working...

I grabbed it but took it off in a couple days  - couldn't deal with it.  I couldn't view my google ads on my computer - kept getting a message bar saying it was blocking my content.  Then when I went to work on my pages that are in .shtml I couldn't even open up my own web pages on my own computer.  That was the last straw for me - took that crap off and have no plans to get it back.  I did try finding some info and one article said the firewall could cause you to be unable to access some things on your computer, but I just don't have the time or wherewithal to mess with that - I found it a major pain in the butt.

From what I have been told, if you disable the firewall, you should not have many issues with SP2. I have not downloaded it and I really don't have time to play with it here at work. I will have to look into it soon as I have 40 computers to maintain and will need to convert them all over to SP2 eventually.

Thanks, Hope - I did find a page about that firewall while looking around for solutions   -  here's the link if it will help anyone:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242

I may try it again and disable that bugger, but frankly, don't really want to, although I have a feeling will have to in time.  I'm already getting errors and when it says, "click here for help" or whatever, and I click the link, I get told "You do not have the service pack 2 installed...". Grr!

BTW many times have thought I'd like to try XP service pack 2 (having XP home edition) just gut feel kept me from down-loading it, just in case it caused far more probs. than the few (actually hardly any) I have with the present one....so I'll take Hopes' advice and wait until they have fixes for the major bugs.... Cool

I got it free with a magazine. I've just installed it and the only thing that bugs me so far is the pop-up stopper. You can click to let sites have pop-ups though.

I changed my PC to the 1st one I didn't make myself and it came with XP. I quickly installed service pack 2 before I installed too much else. So far it's great! Seems like sp2 only improves security features.

I can now open masses of windows and applications and it doesn't complain. And, the visual appearance is very nice. Even text looks better.

Andy, my concern about sp2 is the new firewall. Since all the work computers are already behind a firewall, this makes it a bit tricky. I need to learn all about sp2 before I download it or I will have a few employees complaining about problems.

Hi Hope,

I use a router for my home network with a built-in hardware firewall and it didn't upset windows sp2 at all. The sp2 firewall has an option for on or off (so your main concern can be disabled ;-). I switched it on since I don't trust my family members to virus-check downloads etc. Now I can still set up shared folders and see all the computers in my network group. I guess in your case you would keep the sp2 firewall off.

Apart from the firewall, sp2 seems to warn you if you have not got virus protection installed.

Since this install, I've sucessfully implemented a second user profile with Japanese text input and reading features alongside my English profile all without a hitch apart from searching on Google about how to do it. Also, copying email account stuff from one computer or profile to another is not explained well by MS.

Andy, I realize it is easy to turn off the firewall, but since i have been extremely over worked, i have not had time to even look at it. I am hoping that come next month I will finally have some time.

Don't know if it's SP2 or not (It could be internet explorer) but an advert on a website that i go to, doesn't show (it's just a red X) but it shows to everyone else. Also the counters on EBAY (counts the number of people on an Ebay webpage) don't work. They just show as red X's to me.

BTW these things don't work in Firefox either, but i took my firefox settings from IE.
