This is the sort of website you need to construct to build high search engine ranking and lots of targeted visitors.

http://www.weightlossninja.com

Please feel free to link to it if you want an example for your SEO students, webmasters etc. Notice how I've minimised the link-outs and it's packed with original text and just a few graphic touches. The right side is going to be a landing bay for affiliate code and revenue-producing stuff to be added after it starts generating significant traffic. Possibly, the top right could house a banner ad too?

My other sites (in my signature) have tutorials on how to focus on particular keywords and how to lay out your site.

It's not a proven winning website template yet but I plan to use it as the basis of a webmaster tutorial that I will market after it is successful since it could be about any subject on the planet. I just went for weightloss since it is popular and I am personally working at this area myself.

This site has a Google page rank of 4. My other sites have 5 or 6 for Google page rank.  I have to admit to paying more attention to my other sites and projects. I have made some pages recently that rank #1 and in the top ten for Google searches. For example on Weighlossninja, my page on "Gochujang Recipe" is #1 Some pages take only days to rank #1 but I think it helps alot to keep adding fresh content and optimized pages.

Sorry I can't comment on Yahoo, I ignore it from a webmaster perspective after they started charging for listings. I only use Yahoo for email and Stock market price quotes. :-) which are free. And they are very good for this!

The other thing I'm doing more of now is to involve my users in building the site traffic by offering referral links and letting them utilize the power of my site to build their business and web-based income. At the same time, I'm getting them to opt in to a members club.
