I just started DVD authoring under Windows 98SE but there is a file size limit of 4GB.

This could be a problem when capturing AVI files.

why you're still on 98? my memories of the past doesn't contain anything good about it, from what I remeber it's pretty unstable and slow(at least on hardware I had in those times). As for problem itself I'm not sure as still have no spare money to buy DVD writer(and it's actually not sold here, you have to order it from somwhere)

My DVD writer works fine. So why do I have to spend over £100 on Windows XP ?

However, lately my computer is reluctant to start and shut down!

The startup problem can't be anything related to operating system since the OP system hasn't started! Maybe the Power supply?

The shutdown, I blame on Norton since it keeps crashing after closing the alert box.

PC's are bad! I hate them. Why can't someonme make one that works like my VCR or TV that NEVER crashes or hangs up?

Andy I guess that it could be not hardware but rather software problem, if it's cause you problems try to use only stable software which is well coded. Such software(if you have quality hardware) wouldn't crash on you and wouldn't bring weird bugs during your work(that's the reason I'm switched to Linux, here I could choose stable, testing on unstable packages depending what kind of stability I wish to get, too bad that Windows doesn't come in these flavours).

Why can't I play back a homemade DVD on my DVD player? It'll playback on my computer but still in pretty bad quality. Both my DVD burner & DVD player are new models. What am I doing wrong?

Hi snowrust! I'm new to DVDs as well but I tend to believe that it could be caused maybe by poor quality of DVD-Rs or maybe your player doesn't support DVDs format you try to put there? sorry wasn't give you a lot of help, maybe someone else would be more helpful.

To make a better quality DVD i always make an image of what i want to copy and burn the DVD from the image at a slower speed than the DVD copier is capable of. So instead of burning at my top speed of 8X i slow it down to burn at 4X speed.
 Wink
The DVD copies i get are better for me doing it this way.
