Does it get as expensive as I keep hearing/reading?  I have an offer through my new web host for 50 dollars free, but I've heard that their bids are pretty high if you want good rankings.  Anyone know if this is true?  I read that they do just remove your site from the listings if you run out of money, and that you can deposit more anytime you want, so they don't just auto-charge, which is good.

Overture can get very expensive if you let it. You need to choose your keywords carefully so as to not let that happen. Overture does have a minimum $20/month spending.

Thank you, Hope - I'm seriously thinking of trying that free 50 dollar offer with just some very specific key words - think that would be a good idea?  I've tried two or three other PPC SE's and was very disappointed - just don't want to get in over my head, you know!?   Sad

You need to be very careful what keywords you choose. They need to be searched upon, but at the same time they need to be low cost. You can lose money very fast a Overture. Remember it is distributed to some of the busiest search engines out there.

If you have an account at WordTracker, you should do some research on your keywords to choose the best possible ones.

Thanks again, Hope - I never heard of Word tracker, but have their site up here and will look it over.  I did learn a little about using keywords in my few experiences, but not enough, that's for sure!  The last one  I tried I added freebies, but at the lowest cost - in less than 2 hours my funds were gone - most of the hits to that silly freebies page.  Never again will I list that as a keyword!  Honestly!  But, it was a lesson learned.  I always learn the hard way  Roll Eyes

Jen, I would suggest using overture to get the leads you want, but can't seem to generate through organic search. That would not be the "free" stuff. It would be the more unusual keyword phrases.

Thanks hope- I think I'm going to go with it and just get specific on some of the health featues and stuff - figure this is a good opportunity to try it, so why not go for it, right!  Never know - I just hear they can got so darned expensive, but also read they don't re-charge you, they let you decide when to put more funds in, which is nice.

Thanks again, Hope!  Much obliged!

the trick to doing well on overture is to place qualifying words ahead of your normal phrases because they place exact match listings in front of broad match listings. while this will prevent you from getting a ton of exposure it will radically drop your prices.

for example "buy link analysis software" would rank above "link analysis software" on searches for "buy link analysis software" even if the first term was bid at 10 cents and the second one was 20 dollars.

here is a good free tool for creating various versions of your keyword groupings from lists
http://www.related-pages.com/adWordsKeywords.aspx

in one column you can do "buy, purchase, download" next column "green, blue, orange" next column "widget, doublewidgets, triplewidgets" ...etc.

and it will group them with their various combinations.
