target="_blank" and popup stoppers

This site uses * target="_blank" * to open new windows. Thats good for me, because I like to close the new window, rather than have to use the back button, then wait for the original window to reopen.

My questions is, how is this not stopped by the popup blockers. I have tried * target="_blank" *  on my own website, and thought that it was a bad idea.

I have an art site, and it would be a good device. When people clicked on a thumbnail, they would get a new window no, larger then the image they requested. They could see the old page in the background and understand that it was still there on the screen under the new window. They would not have to reload the previous page, and thats doing something, because the page with all the thumbnails is naturally slow to load.

Any comments or suggestion?

Most, but not all pop-up blockers only block pop-up windows that you do not activate be clicking a link. Some blockers block those too, so be careful. Putting a disclamer that if you have a blocker do a control click, should help. It will allow the pop-ups even if there is a blocker.
