So what do you consider the essentials...the "ingredients" that every index page MUST have...in terms of optimization strategies...

Eloquent, descriptive title, lots of good content revolving around a theme (with keywords repeated often,) H1 or H2 (both if possible), consistent theme, relevant incoming and outgoing links (some to authority hubs), keywords in alt tags...and HuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuh

Good Title tags with keywords
Good decription tags with keywords
Good website copy with keywords
good inbound links with keywords

It is simple. Grin

Now for the indepth answer:

Title tags and meta description tags should be different on each page. They should reflect that content of that  page. They need to have keywords, but not too many. Remember if you use too many keywords, it is considered spam. Choose 1-2 keyword phrases per page.

Website copy should be solid information. It shoudl be easy to read for your users. It should be featuring 1-2 keyword phrases. Do not over stuff the keywords.

You need to gather inbound links from sites that are related to yours. If you have a site about real estate agents, then you need to find complimentary sites to link to you, not joe's bar and grill. They doesn't help you much.
