What do you look for in a host?
Well, the question is rather general, just looking for everybodies individual answers.

Hmmm, I'd go with :-

Cost per year
How much space you get
How much bandwidth you get
How many extra's you get
What sort of control panel you get
Does it offer a support forum
?

I look for the best value for my clients. Each client has a different need, so what I look for is different for each.

If you buy a web-master related off-line magazine they tend to do regular reviews of hosts and monitor uptime etc. It can be dangerous to search on the web for good hosts. I picked one recently because they sounded familiar. Only later I realised they were in my mind because I read some bad posts about them but forgot!

Before you look for anything else, you'll need find reliable hosts that will also be able to suit your needs... But sometimes it can be hard to differentiate between the frauds and the honest.

I would suggest this site to anyone looking for a host:
http://www.100best-web-hosting.com/articles18.html

They give reviews on the best web hosts as well as ratings done by other users.

Yeh, but how can I be sure they are impartial? I know a lot of hosting directories and reviews built by webhosting companies owners to promote their bussiness. They place the name of their company on the top of ratings to create an impression on people and attract they to buy their product / servise.

I guess you can't...

If you don't believe they are a reputable source, you could always check with magazines, newspapers, and popular websites. Ipowerweb was ranked #2 this year by 100 Best Web Hosting, and has in the past been listed as "Top 7" by CNET.

If you're still unsure, you can also check out the BBB Online for certified reliable web hosting companies.

The best solution is to learn how to work with the distribution of the material you are working with....
ie understand how server technology works, then use it.... host your own site(s).
It's not that hard really.

Or if you don't like to take care of your own site in that way, then just get a host you like... or better yet, a host that you know personally.
I'm a rude person I guess :-P

Hosting your own site might be the best solution, but what about someone who doesn't know alot about this type of thing? What information would you recommend to them to get them started off on the right foot?

I am personally interested in hosting my own site, but I am not sure what is required or if it's worth the time involved. But if it's not that hard, I would definitely take a whack at it.

Buy a mediocre box, have port 80 open with your isp, set your dns with whatever registrar you use, to the right address, and setup apache on the box... there's great programs for setting up apache, like xampp... if you dont want to bother with that, IIS is EXTREMELY easy to set up for just one site... it's stupid with multiple sites however... but supposedly still "works".

If you don't have the money to buy a server, then just use your pc as a server... but that's not wise, if you do rendering and typical pc stuff with it. So if you don't have a spare computer, orthe spare money to get a spare computer, then just have someone else host your stuff.

I guess it would be not wise only in one case... if you have a lot of visitors on the web site... if it's just a homepage there shouldn't be much problems with it.

http://www.findmyhosting.com is one of the best impartial directories that I have found.  The hosting companies pay a commission for each client who signs up with them that are referred from this directory.  They have no banner ads so they don't have any "favorites".
