There are a lot of discussion happening on different forums about PR and it's importance, and I've just thought about simple and how I believe pretty illustrative way to proove that PR isn't so important like many could think.
to see this yourself just type in the Google:

as you may see Altavista will appear on the first position, if you have GoogleBar installed you'll see that it has PR 9, it's followed by http://searchenginewatch.com/ which is PR 8 and http://www.lycos.com/ with PR 9, Google itself which is found much more deeper has PR 10.

Here is some more detail on this:

1. AltaVista - PR9 - 48,900 backwards links
2. Lycos - PR9 - 40,8000 backwards links
3. Search Engine Watch - PR8 - 14,000 links
4. Dogpile - PR8 - 14,800 links
5. Excite - PR9 - 29.500 links
6. Google - PR10 - 341,000 links
7. Yahoo - PR9 - 432,000 links
8. Search.com - PR8 - 137,000 links
9. MetaCrawler - PR8 - 9,510 links
10. Mamma - PR8 - 4,000 links
11. AllTheWeb - PR8 - 24,300

This just tells me that Google is showing it's strength. That is all. You will see that Yahoo, should have a higher PR based in the number of inbound links. It should also rank higher. (Based off the theories of the google algo). I also see that AllTheWeb has 6 times the inbound links than Mamma and should be ranking higher.

I think this is not the best example. You are talking about Googles core business and they are going to manipulate the rankings of this just to show strength. I think we need to find another area to test this theory.
