Hi. I'm new. I've been trying very hard for quite a while to get help with my website. Whenever it seems I'm getting somewhere, I hit another snag. Can someone please, please help me? I'm desperate.

What I need to do is to create a link within my website that will open a new window. I don't care how this is done. The new window will automatically start a download and then, when the download starts, the window will close. It's very important that it loads a new window first and then starts the download and closes the no longer needed window. Can anybody help with this?

Perhaps dynamic H.T.M.L. would work, but it seems like more of a javascript type of function to me. I've looked everywhere I can think of. I'd appreciate any help. Thank you very much.

ok here is how I would solve this, I would create link on the page which would call new window, in this new window you'll have another pop-up wich will lead to file, right after this I would close new window.
I'm pretty bad with javascripts but if you wish I can try to come up with some code(can't promise anything). Also I should warn you that such way of calling windows could get you in troubles with pop-up stoppers, since some of them would surely block them and users would have to stop their software in order to make download...
May I ask you if this a way to fight with leachers or something else? as if so there could be better solutions IMHO...

I am not sure why you would want to open a new window, I would feed the download from a database. You can do this with out moving from your current URL.

Be suspicious guys:

Downloading implies copying code from a webserver to the c: drive directly. And anyone asking how to do this transparently i.e. the window opens, starts the download and closes before anyone knew what happened AND they are are a newbie with 1 post and don't reveal their url are potentially dangerous.

Luckily this is not possible, javascript and java etc. is designed not to allow this to happen.

Please do not teach anyone how to host an automatic install script on their website!
