Denis, I have been checking out the linux page and things seem pretty Greek to me at this point. I looked at the knoppix site....AT this point not knowing anything ,but wishing to aquire what I need so I can study it and get started, could you tell me exactly what I need to get or do? I mean if that's possible...Like for instance if I downloaded from knoppix is that the linux opperating system? Or the bones of it?Or is there a more complete thing to download from elsewhere ?

Rosie, don't be afraid, guess that if someone would show you Windows when you know nothing about PC you would get more or less same feeling Smiley
Knoppix is a good choice to start with IMHO. I've try to install RedHat numerous times(all my friends have only this distro), and all the times after short period of time I just delete it since it was slow and boring(don't sure how to say this right)...
But when I've got on my hands Knoppix it's really change my point of view for Linuxes since I've saw a system which could start to comepete with Windows just after you insert it in CD-Rom, you don't have to dig into tons of textfiles and so on. You got all necessary applications including Office, Wine(to run Windows progams), access to NTFS and FAT disks, GIMP, mail clients and instant messengers, Games, and flexibility of Linux all in one Smiley
Ok and now I'm back to your question, Knoppix is a system which doesn't need to be installed on HardDrive(you still may do this if you plan to use it as frequently as from HD it will run faster). It would be suitable for education needs and work especially for those folks who get used to Windows OS.
As for getting Knoppix there are several ways to do so, most easy is to take CD from someone who have it and burn a copy(it's ok legally since it's GPL), or you can download file named KNOPPIX_V3.3-2004-02-09-EN.iso from Knoppix FTP server and burn this ISO image onto CD(I never use this method since it's hard for me to download such amount of data and even ISP admin who sometimes download updates for his OS tell me that files could arrive corrupted), but there is another way to get Knoppix and other Linux distros and free programs and games, check this site: http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com
You may order Knoppix CD here
for $0.99 US + $1.50 US$(for Shipping and Handling). I guess it's not so big price for OS? Smiley
Hope I've answered your question, feel free to ask more.

PS Knoppix is based on Debian(maybe a bit tricky to setup thank Knoppix but work very well later) Linux, which I'm using myself.

PSPS I've tried Knoppix long time ago and don't remeber if web server goes by default on CD, but I guess that once you become a bit familliar with system there would be some way to install them on the top of excisting installation, or you may choose other distro which would have servers installed by default.

Thanks Denis(most of what you said made sense, some of it went way over my head lol!) I will do the knoppix thing to become familiar with the os.I have lots of irons in the fire right now so probably won't do a switch for a little while. Wink

Wouldn't mind trying KNOPPIX myself. The only thing that's stopping me moving over to linux is the amount of windows software i've got.
