Recently I've tried to compile 2.6.3 and later 2.6.0 on my new Debian, I've did this a lot of times tweaking the things although I failed to make it work, all the time I got something like this:
Quote
VFS: cannot open root device "306" or unknown-block (3,6)
please append a correct "root=" boot option
unable to mount root fs on unknown - block(3, 6)
after wasting some time with tweaking LILO and later GRUB and tweaking kernel itself I decide to try and comile 2.4.18 which I had, and it's work from the first try, after this I've start to search and found that I'm not only one who have similar problem http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/1955 unfortunately no solution work for me, I've try everything what was suggested but failed to make it work, maybe someone of you have similar problem or know how to solve it?

PS I've got feeling that it's problem because of VIA chipset as most of people reporting about kernel panic had it...

just wish to tell that I've solved this problem few days ago, one evening I just decide to try it from the scratch I also decide to change my politic of selecting components, I've disable everything what I'm not using including HotPlug support, Ext 3 and other FS, and all things which I'm not going to use or wasn't sure what they are doing(previously I was more tolerative and include them into the kernel). I was pretty surprised but it's worked for me and now I'm enjoying 2.6.4 Kernel Wink
