Pixar, with a string of computer-animated blockbusters to its credit, including "Monsters, Inc." and the "Toy Story" films, broke off negotiations Thursday to extend its partnership with Disney and said it would seek a more favorable deal with another studio... Shares in Pixar rose $2.78, more than 4 percent, to $66.98.. Disney shares fell 58 cents to $23.87... One certainty is that Pixar will have no problem cutting a more favorable deal with a new studio... Warner Bros., Fox and Sony all expressed interest in talking to Pixar.
 Undecided
Some people say Nintendo will do a deal, but i don't think so.

Hmm... It's a bit sad, but understandable. I guess Disney still has Miyazaki, right? I am curious, however, to see what Disney accomplishes without all the extra help.

I doubt that too... Nintendo has little to do with films anyway.

Disney has gone down hill over the last few years. All they ever seem to do is make follow ups of old classics like Peter Pan, 101 Dalmatians and Beauty & the Beast. Disney needs to get it's act together and start making films like the ones Pixar have been making.
As for Pixar, i think they could go it alone, but doing a deal with such as Sony Entertainment would give them the money they need to concentrate on making fantastic movies and not have to keep an eye on the bank balance.

BTW i think Sony already have something to do with movies and i'm sure Nintendo would like to be in the same boat.

"Sony Pictures Entertainment's global operations encompass motion picture production and distribution, television programming and syndication, home video acquisition and distribution, operation of studio facilities, development of new entertainment technologies and distribution of filmed entertainment in 67 countries worldwide."

Regardless of Nintendo's position with film-making, I don't believe Nintendo has the funds available for a company like Pixar. Last I heard, they were barely doing well enough to keep their own heads above water.

I think it was a good split.

Disney's animated movies have really gone downhill, but they had the market on adventure movies this summer with Pirates of the Caribbean, which is supposed to be a trilogy.

Pixar definitely has the market on animated films, and Disney either has to step up to their level or get more films like Pirates.

I saw some fascinating statistics in Newsweek this week comparing the two companies' last five films:

Pixar Worldwide Grosses
Finding Nemo, 2003 - $844 million
Monsters, Inc., 2001 - $524 million
Toy Story 2, 1999 - $485 million
A Bug's Life, 1998 - $363 million
Toy Story, 1995 - $362 million

Disney Worldwide Grosses for non-Pixar animated films
Brother Bear, 2003 - $126 million
Treasure Planet, 2002 - $112 million
Lilo & Stitch, 2002 - $269 million
Atlantis: The Lost Empire, 2001 - $180 million
Emperor's New Groove, 2000 - $169 million

As far as who Pixar will end up with, according to the Newsweek article, Sony, Warner Bros., Fox, and Universal are candidates.  But Pixar CEO Steve Jobs doesn't want the same kind of relationship he had with Disney;  rather just someone to do the distribution and marketing of the movies.

The only thing that sucks for Pixar out of this deal is the fact that Disney has the rights to make sequels to the films that were created during their 12-year partnership.

hmm I didn't look on this happening like this before... actually now I see good points in this splitting, previously I thought that it would harm both companies but maybe it don't and both of them will continue developing in thier own fields...
Thanks Sunny!

ha and here is surprise, just see what I've heard minute ago on EuroNews... seems that Comcast going to buy Disney... here is the article:
Quote
Surprise bid for Disney

A blockbuster of a bid has been unveiled to buy one of the best known names in entertainment. The takeover target is the Walt Disney company and the outfit that wants to own it is Comcast which is America's biggest cable TV operator.

The price is 42 billion euros. Comcast would also assume Disney's nine and a half billion euros of debt.

Comcast said it had approached Disney directly for merger talks but was rebuffed.

Talking up the merger, Comcast chief executive, Brian Roberts, said the combined companies with their distribution and content would be far stronger than either of them alone.

Disney's chief executive, Michael Eisner, is currently under pressure from shareholders - including the nephew of the company's founder - who are campaigning to remove him complaining about his performance.
