I submitted my search engine to dmoz ages ago and thought i'd try to find out why i'm not listed yet.
Anyway, i asked here :-

http://resource-zone.com/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=status&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&PHPSESSID=

Hi,

About 5 or 6 months ago i submitted www.12noon.net to dmoz and i think it was in this Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development: Promotion: Pay-Per-Click Advertising: Search Engines: Small-Scale: Pre-Funded PPC Accounts directory.
At the time of submitting, i was getting timeout errors and ended up submitting about 4 times and still wasn't sure if i had submitted.
It might even be this Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development: Promotion: Pay-Per-Click Advertising: Search Engines: Small-Scale Directory.
Anyway can someone please check my status and tell me how things are going please ?

Thanks.
And got this reply :-
Quote
It's waiting in the former category - Pre-funded PPC - with a submission date of 20/Apr/2003. The backlog is not very large but it doesn't appear to be a very popular area to edit in... sorry not to have better news. You can come back and ask for status again in a month or longer, if you want to.

Just posted this to show that it does take for ever to get a listing in Dmoz
 Lips Sealed
Oh well my time will come.
Someone might become an editor and help me out.

There are thousands of directories out there, DMOZ isn't god.

Links from other directories are just as good (or even better) then one link from DMOZ. Yes a link from there is helpful, but the time you waste wondering, inquiring, and cursing trying to figure why DMOZ won't list you, can be better used submitting else where.

Submit to DMOZ, and move on, check back in 2 -3 weeks and try again

yup both Hope and Spherica are right, it's possible to become editor if you be able to prove that main purpose of your application to editor position is lisitng your own site and that you're good understand PPC industry and could contribute something useful to directory. But as Spherica said it's not really worth to worry so much about DMOZ, I would suggest to submit there once and just wait(in the meanwhile you could get listed in many other directories which could help you much more than DMOZ).
PS directory where you would like to list your site http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Promotion/Pay-Per-Click_Advertising/Search_Engines/Small-Scale/ is actually have no editor so probably someone of editors from higher categories take care of this cat. so most likely if you have time and will to edit this category you can apply, since it's just good for new editors IMHO.

I'm not sure I'm cut out to be an editor of Dmoz.
 Embarrassed
Anyway I've been submitting to lots of other directories for ages and it's just the odd few paid ones like joeant that I've got to submit to next.
Still others to submit to as well, but i was just giving an example of how long it can take to get a site listed in Dmoz.

No Google is the head of the search engine gods right now and google uses DMOZ. This would make DMOZ a minor deity. Anyone who tells you not to worry about DMOZ obviously has lots of money to spend on ppc and paid indexing.

DMOZ is the biggest and the best free directory out there. It is used by more search engines and directories than any other indexes. It is considered a very strong inbound link and helps with ranking. If you don't believe this, try getting a site ranked without DMOZ. Once it is stable, then submit to DMOZ and see what happens to your rankings. It will go up. I have seen it happen many times.

DMOZ is still a very important player in the search engine/directory community and don't let anyone fool you about that.

but actually it's not because of DMOZ is used by Google Directory from what I know, such effect is achieved because DMOZ data is used by thousands if not millions sites out there just like on this site: http://www.all-4-all.co.il/ same this would happen to you if you manage to submit to Yahoo since data also spread to smaller regional catalogs so by appearing in theis listing you get not one but many links. So actually such effect IMHO could be acheived without DMOZ but ODP just make it easier...

You are absolutely right! Many... many... many sites pull information from DMOZ.
I receive today many hits from web-sites that take my webs-site data from DMOZ!

So... It would be a good idea to keep on striving to get listed there! It is well worth it!

Hi everyone.  I just wanted to say that if anyone has any questions about dmoz id be happy to answer them.  Although I am not speaking on the behalf of dmoz or its staff, I could try to provide some tips on getting sites listed on dmoz and what some of the editors may look for in a good submission.

I current;y have a clients site with 39 listing in DMOZ, yes it is very well to get the site listed in DMOZ it does help, but I refuse to waste my time trying to figure out why noone lists site I submit, I resubmit every 2 or 3 months if I don't see the site has got a listing.

I'll also agree that there are quite a few sites that use DMOZ's listing. But I don't have the time to try and wonder why, I also don't think I have what it takes to be an editor, and why I don't comment on the politics that other have mentioned on this forum and others about DMOZ, I can't peasant if I never worked there, its all second hand info.

OH and BTW, I have never payed for getting listed anywhere.

Here are few other directories to submit to http://www.spheri.ca/directories.html and don't forget www.spheri.com Grin

My host for sphericom went down for 2 weeks and google dropped all the pages, it shows some stupid /index.afx but those are not my pages, the links don't even work, the hoster apologized and worked out a deal, so the probalem has been resolved and awaiting google to come around again. It was a PR4 before it got dumped.

Hi Mikey, that's nice to have editors on our community so we can more precisely answer questions regarding DMOZ, since I'm editor as well but I'm pretty newbie yet.
So welcome once again and please enjoy your stay.  Cheesy
