I don't want to make a duplicate post, but this is kind of related to promotion; http://forum.weblamp.net/index.php?threadid=1253.  This is a thread that I started and it's about Work Tracker http://www.wordtracker.com.

Work Tracker is often mentioned in SEO discussions, but it can also be used for marketing and promotion tool.  For example, when I was doing some research a couple of hours ago, I found a couple of things just by looking at keywords

1. People are looking to get a degree rather than take a course or two to further their education; status is apparently pretty important ("online degrees" is so much more frequently searched than "online courses").

2. Kind of obvious but something that I did not realize.  People in IT industry(from semi-conductor to web) use terms like "directory" and "search engine", but these are not kind of terms that regular people use.  If the produce or the service that you are promoting is not directly associated with IT, these terms should not be emphasized.

IT people tend to know the "industry" buzz words. This is why they would use different terms than others. You need to pick up the buzz words for the industry you are marketing to. These words should be focused on. This is where WordTracker can really come in handy.

Ah, I've never actually used wordtracker, but I've read many great articles on it. It seems this program has been quite successful... Perhaps it's because it actually works.

I highly recommend that you take a look into it if you have not done so already; it's free to try it out.

I have, but not the paid account.  Only free account.

Are you talking about free account or paid one?  If you are asking about free account, you should get one day.  Check keywords that you are interested in,  how often they are searched.  Free account allows you to get statistics from AltaVista (I thought...).  No Google, no AllTheWeb or Teoma, but it gives you good idea of how keywords are searched.

Right, of course.  Well, since you run this forum, I don't know how you feel, but you might want to check this site http://www.highrankings.com/forum/ if you never visited the site before.  The site, the forum is pretty much all about SEO.  I'm sure if you post a message or two about Word Tracker, someone is using the paid one and will tell you about it.

Denis I use it on a regular basis. It is very good. I don't know how anyone can market a site without this tool. It provides you with an amazing amout of data that you just can't find elsewhere.

We use Word Tracker (the paid subscription version) quite heavily and find it very useful. It is a great tool as long as you realise its limitations.

The main limitation is that it uses data from US search engines, therefore the words appearing in it have a definite American slant. For instance, you will not find many references to cars in Word Tracker, but autos features quite heavily. Similarly, transatlantic spelling differences can skew the results (eg: color instead of colour, center instead of centre).
You have to know what the US alternatives are and adjust the results accordingly.

The second limitation is freshness (and it is a minor one really). The data is from the previous two month's searches. The top 1000 search phrases are updated daily but the other 175 million are only updated weekly.
So, search phrases that are constant throughout the year will be unaffected. However, searches that vary over time (ie: seasonal search terms or new product releases) will tend to be a little out of date, only by a week, but if you are targeting valentines gifts, the rise is quite sharp before Feb 14th. Therefore, by the time Word Tracker starts to pick up on these searches and you have built the pages and submitted them, it is too late.
As I said, the data is only one week out of date at any one time, but it can be enough to ruin your day if you are not careful.

Hope this helps

Be happy

thanks for info Dug, you've show some important points in using WT which I wasn't aware of... because for me it's no matter how people say auto or car... since I understand both words and don't really know which one is American.

I think the free version should be adequate for most users of these forums. p.s. I thought it had a UK slant  Undecided
