Anyone into stocks and shares? Ideal supplement to attempts to make millions off the web. Seriously there is the web, property and shares and possibly antiques. Maybe some stuff I missed.

I received 40,000 stocks in an news company I built a site for. I also have around 100 stocks in TECO (Tampa Electric Company). I've made $75 off of them over the last 6 years. Not very much, but then again, I didn't have that many stocks... If I had, what, 10,000? That would be a nice little amount of cash.

Or real estate... I've always wanted to go into stocks and real estate. But you really need a nice amount of money before you run off and buy houses, so that will have to wait until after I make huge amounts of moola when my stock splits.

Believe me, to just go and buy a house, you have to have a lot more money than the basic price Cool.......First the real estate agent you buy through wants 11%  Then there are rates on a yearly basis for the place, which must be paid in advance  (generally can be $1000  AUS annually)  Then you have to know if its air conditioned or wood heated...so you know what your up for in energy bills, then the telephone has to have new account set up....etc  moving, (transportation I mean) and the list is endles, I know becasue I am right now in the process of coming out from rental property This is the second time I've ever had to rent) and wait until something on the housing market  comes up and then hopefully I can buy
the place I have my eye on..... Wink
So to see a place and say, "that's a real nice place, do I have enough money for that?" double double check for all the extras

Here endeth the first lesson Grin

In the UK we are obsessed with real estate. After all it's land that the planet has only so much of. Some people even bought plots of land on the moon! However, how do you defend that from pirates?

Buy land, it's the only solid investment you can make! Anything else might turn to dust.

I plan on doing that very soon... After I finish college and get a job, I think I might buy a few acres.

Your not wrong Andy.... Wink Cool
But house prices in this country up along the Eastern seaboard, from Melbourne to Brisbane, have escalated to almost two times the original price four to five years ago....To get something nice with a couple of acres on it, you have go  w a  y   w a y   inland from the coast (I actually went 176 kiloms inland (direct west) before I could get something decent with a couple of acres) that was the price I wanted to spend.  So becaseu of that, I am going (when the contracts go through) to end up in a  village with 200 people in it and little village shops etc..The nearest place being Glen Innes, half an hour one way, or the next nearest place is forty minutes the opposite way at Tenterfield.... still in New South Wales, by theway, but I'm really looking forward to it, and was very fortunate this day and age to have found something I like for the price I was only prepared to pay...... Cheesy
Alas, for the youngsters at school today and their 'dreams' ahead of them, I personally think it's going to be so tough Sad and maybe the earlier age at which they may earn/obtain 'tickets' for a skill or trade, suited to this day and age and land and house prices, the better they will be down the track say 2015 2020 Undecided Cheesy Grin

Susieq,

what are acres?

My 4-bed house has land the size of 1x1 Kangaroo hops in the UK so you have some way further to go in inflationary down-sizing.

I still have my eye on the moon or sub-aqua land. Oops, almost gave away my master plan.

Hello Andy,
I'm not sure Wink but what I think I was tring to say is that, after being on the 'house-hunting' trail (and I've never really been far from a CBD here) I was so surprised/shock/horror :oetc...that even in this great big country (and believe me out there is massive- desolate-endless woods and bushes- desert) that house prices were so much affected......I had to go almost 200 kilometres inland to find something with a 'backyard' Wink and cosy cottage type thing....It wouldn't have been maybe less than 200 years ago that there was no-one here only the original occupants Roll Eyes Tongue
What happened? Sad  In a larger country one would think, space for a home is relative to the size of the country..but somehow along the line, I obviously became very confused. Grin Grin
As usual Grin

Seems like most people are into land.

No gamblers out there then?
